The Process of Becoming is the result of over eight years of self-guided musical practice, experimentation, and exploration with the goal of completing a full length continuous album. This is that album. It is an honest expression of my faith in God and my long determination to create the sounds in my head.

The style of the album represents an attempt at channeling all of my influences, which range from IDM, dark ambient, drone, electro-acoustic, downtempo, post-rock, progressive metal/djent, mathcore, and classical music.

The album is arranged as one hour-long continuous piece of music, though each individual track stands on its own as an independent song. Most of these songs originated as sound experiments between the years 2012 and 2013, with a few outlying late bloomers. In 2015 I finally began the task of sourcing my most coherent arrangements and composing an album. In 2016 and 2017 I produced on my laptop while riding the train to work, and this is when these sounds truly began developing their finished form and structure. The final step was to learn mixing and mastering. Now here we are.

Along the process of creating, the album was divided into four parts:

I. Dreaming

3. Dreaming of Andromeda

Your head is in the stars. The universe is yours and you can almost grasp it. A strange but wondrous mystery lies in the horizon if you step into the unknown. Reality beckons to ground you and your inner turmoil reveals itself as temptation lies ahead. Yet you continue to dream for you know there’s more out there.

II. Falling

6. Drones in the Jungle

The dream feels real, oh so real now. Everything you’ve wanted is now yours, or so you think. It’s not God’s will though, and this path leads to darkness. Falling into the fire, those dreams seem so far away now. A glimmer of hope caresses your fears, which keeps your eyes open. The path is uncertain and the darkness is overwhelming, yet you take the dive and succumb to the call that lures you deeper.

III. Running

Your fear shows its face, and instead of confronting your demons you run. You’re on your own now, but as you push further you think you’ve found the new way. It starts to feel good, and a vibrancy takes over you as you indulge in this new light. Your senses are engaged, but overstimulated. Something feels wrong along the edges, but you give in to temptation and feed from its light until you fall once more into darkness.

IV. Lifting

You stubbornly get back up as you continue to walk on your own. You’ve found a new way, and it feels good once more. Really good. You still notice something more though. As God’s love beckons you to turn around, you struggle to move any further. There’s a peace you haven’t felt this whole time now. You accept it, for a moment, but can’t let go of this last way you’ve chosen. It hurts now though and feels broken. Its toxicity is revealed and with one final relapse, you accept and surrender to God.

You look up, reaching towards the Heavens. It’s cold and desolate up here, but you know it’s the right way. A storm encroaches on you as you climb higher, imposing one last trial. But you fight through it, and then you’re there. You accept His divine grace and it envelops you like nothing before. The energy pulsing through you is abrasive but calming, captivating you until you are finally released. And now that you’ve felt His presence, nothing feels the same without Him.

The entire album was created in Ableton Live 8 and 9, using only built-in Ableton presets and instruments that I customized. No samples were used, except for my own personal field recordings as well as some processed recordings of my voice.
